Be still
and know
I am God.
(Psalm 46:10)

Intro Workshop in West Village on October 3

An Introductory Workshop

Whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door

and pray to your Father who is in secret;

and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Silence.  Quiet.  Stillness.  Openness.  Listening.   These words describe the experience of someone who is beginning to taste the reality of God’s presence within.

Since the fourth century Desert Fathers described their practice of interior silence as a way we can experience the mystery of God, faithful Christians have learned to connect with our inmost selves to develop a taste for the eternal.

Taken principally from the insights of St. John of the Cross and the fourteenth century Cloud of Unknowing, Centering Prayer is a discipline designed to withdraw our attention from the ordinary flow of thoughts into an awareness of the spiritual level of our being.  This ancient prayer practice is designed for today’s busy men and women of faith that they may find spiritual refuge in what T. S. Eliot called “the still point of the turning world.”

WHERE: The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields
Laughlin Hall
487 Hudson Street
New York, NY
WHEN: Saturday, October 3, 2015, 10AM – 3 PM
Follow-up sessions: Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20

This introductory workshop will be presented by Richard Kigel, longtime parishioner at St. Lukes, certified by Contemplative Outreach to teach Centering Prayer.   The class offers a simple explanation of the basic method and key aspects of the practice: how to handle thoughts during prayer, integrating centering prayer into daily life, and the process of “divine therapy” that opens us to discover the truth of Jesus teaching that “the kingdom of God is within you.”

There is no registration fee.  A suggested donation of $20 helps Contemplative Outreach sponsor events to support and encourage spiritual nourishment.
